MARK A DAVIS: And the Law Offices of Mark A. Davis, we practice immigration-related criminal defense. All of my clients come referred by immigration attorneys for the most part. They all are facing some immigration sanction. Geographically, the vast majority of my clients come from either Mexico or Central America.
Immigration laws are very strict in the United States, especially since 9/11. Since 9/11, the immigration authorities are actively pursuing anyone they think is eligible to be deported. It's very important that you hire someone who has an understanding of both the immigration laws and the impact that your criminal conviction would have on your ability to get status.
I have significant experience in drug trafficking cases. As a prosecutor, I used to prosecute those types of cases. As a defense attorney, I defend against them.
In many ways, what we can do to help our clients is to help them evade deportation if in fact they are deportable, help them maintain eligibility to get a green card if in fact they're trying to get a green card. By understanding what the immigration impact of a criminal conviction or criminal case can be, I can negotiate something that would be helpful to their situation.
